Luxury B&B accommodation in beautiful, rural North Northumberland.

Exclusive, quirky and very comfortable Grade II listed Manor House

This stunning Grade II listed Manor House Bed and Breakfast is the perfect place to spend quality time. Chillingham really is the ideal location to explore all that this glorious county has to offer. To some it is “off the beaten track” however we think that is what makes it so special. Close enough to everywhere to dip in and out as and when you please - Only 20 mins to the coast, 20 mins to the Cheviot Hills, 20 mins to Alnwick - A perfect escape. Chatton, Bamburgh, Alnwick, Wooler, The Holy Island of Lindisfarne and the Northumberland National Park (Which has this year been voted the best National Park in the UK) are all close by. Northumberland has fresh air and open space in abundance. Come and stay, put your feet up and let us look after you in this beautiful, relaxed and welcoming home.

We are in Sawdays and The Good Hotel Guide 2023.

You will have the exclusive use of 2 large and comfortable reception rooms and the large sociable dining room. All with open fires or log burners which are always lit in the afternoons during cooler months.

The morning room is a beautiful room with lots of books, a wood burning stove and a TV.

Flooded with light throughout the day the Drawing room is a peaceful spot. No TV.

Breakfast

We want you to feel comfortable and refreshed after a good nights sleep so we do not have a rigid breakfast time. Instead we serve breakfast at a time of your choosing from 08.30 (or earlier if you have to get up and out) to 10.30am. We can also serve “brunch” up to midday if you have had a late night - As long as we know in advance we should be able to accommodate it.

The Drawing Room - Perfect place to entertain or curl up on a sofa with a good book. Wood burning Stove.

If a group of you take all 3 rooms you will have exclusive use of the “New” (Built in 1828) part of the house. It is like having your own private country house as our accommodation is completely separate.

For group bookings we will also be able to provide evening meals and you can bring a dog or dogs – Please do ask.

Pancakes - A firm favourite.

THE HOUSE

Chillingham Manor is a grade-II Listed building. The house was built around 1700 and remodelled in 1828 by the architect Sir Jeffry Wyatville - who also worked on Chatsworth House and Windsor Castle - to become the vicarage. The front of the house was remodelled in Strawberry Gothic Style. He was an architect of great note - You can read all about him here. https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Jeffry_Wyatville

A BIT ABOUT YOUR HOSTS

We are Ed and Mhairi Seymour. We moved to Northumberland from London at the start of our married life 25 years ago.  We have 2 older children who are 2 and 22 years old. One at Newcastle University reading Classics and the other has just graduated from Newcastle with a degree in International Relations. When we first arrived in Northumberland we lived outside Berwick Upon Tweed and Ed commuted to Newcastle. Mhairi ran a holiday cottage business before moving to a large Farmhouse near Crookham which Mhairi ran as a B&B.  Life then took us just over the border to Scotland. After 7 years running a Shepherds Hut business in the Lammermuir Hills we missed Northumberland. We are so happy to be back home in this wonderful county. We have excellent local knowledge that we are happy to share on where to go, hidden gems to see and the best beaches to visit away from the crowds. Chillingham Manor is first and foremost our home. It is furnished with care and attention to detail and full of family photos, books, maps, original art and a good mix of antique and modern furniture. It is all about being comfortable and relaxed. Our family live in a separate wing so guests have the whole of the “modern” part of the house - built in 1828 - to themselves.

My (Mhairi’s) roots are in hospitality and tourism – it is what I have always done.  In my early twenties I worked as a cook in London, the Highlands of Scotland, African Safari Lodges and on yachts in the med.  I did this to fund my ski seasons of which there were quite a few…. Skiing is a huge part of my life and I continued until quite recently to work in the ski industry in sales and recruitment for a Val d’Isere based company.

Ed used to work in the world of property. His interests lie in environmental work. Planting and looking after trees and eradicating invasive plant species on The River Tweed system. Happy to take on most jobs - he is a very useful chap to have around. Life he has realised is too short to sit in an office and he is never happier than when he is fishing or working his German Wire Haired Pointer in the hills.   He is also a River Tweed Commissioner.

DOGS

We have 3 dogs. 2 little grey hairy Lurchers - Bedlington Whippets - Mum and daughter who will always greet you with a big smile, and a German Wire Haired Pointer. They are very interested in people and very friendly. Sometimes lack manners - for this we apologise in advance….. Unfortunately we cannot have guests dogs to stay. (Unless guests take all 3 bedrooms then you can bring a couple of dogs if they are happy to sleep in the boot room) If guests feel a walk is not a walk unless they have a dog to accompany them feel free to borrow one of ours. They will be very grateful as will we.

WORK TO THE HOUSE

The house needed a lot of TLC and a serious face lift. It was fully refurbished in 2020 and a new hot water system was installed. So important to have lots of hot water after a day in the hills or on the beach.

We look forward to welcoming you to our wonderful, peaceful, relaxed home.
